Gilda Garza’s art is more than just a collection of vibrant colors and intricate shapes. It’s a reflection of her Mexican heritage, a celebration of her cultural roots, and a powerful statement about what it means to be a Mexican-American artist in today’s world.
From her humble beginnings in Sinaloa, Mexico, to her recent collaborations with high-profile fashion designers and her commitment to social causes, she has forged a unique path in the art world, using her talent and her voice to make a difference. In a casual chat with Dyuti Chetta, she discusses her creative process, her artistic inspirations, her future projects, and much more.
Her vibrant and powerful art is a reflection of her culture, family, and community. Growing up in Sinaloa, Mexico, she absorbed the beauty and vibrant colors of her surroundings, which she now expresses in her art. Gilda’s pieces tell stories of her life experiences, showcasing the people and events that inspire her. “Growing up in Mexico, I find my roots in my hometown, Sinaloa. People like to talk about the cartels what they see in the news but there is another side, the one I’ve been living, I was surrounded by the vibrant colors and shapes, is a State where family is the priority, where you treat your wife like a Queen, and the husbands have the same respect back, they are Kings for us, here we look for an excuse to dance and have fun, you see happy people out here, and I can tell many good things about my country, that’s why I paint colorful, bright colors like my Mexico.”
Her creative process is deeply rooted in her experiences. As she puts it, “I am inspired by what happens in my life, the people around me and what is happening in the world, I come to my studio and capture it on the canvas, each work that I paint has a story behind it, just as the writer expresses his feelings with his poems, the artists leave them on the canvas. When I started my collection of ‘The Warriors’ was when I started my career as an artist and I felt like a warrior fighting for my dreams, now with ‘The Kings and Queens’ I want them to inspire you and see you through them and be the best version of yourself, to love yourself, respect yourself and be the best you can be.”
Her collaboration with Roberto Cavalli, a high-end fashion house, not only elevated her career but also cemented her place as a top artist in the industry. When asked how it was to collaborate with Roberto Cavalli, and how this experience impacted her career, she revealed, “I have always been a fan of Roberto Cavalli, the first couture handbag I bought was Cavalli, I remember as a teenager on my family vacation asking to stop on the boutique on Rodeo Drive just to admiring all the beautiful designs, so sexy and feminine, today being part with the Cavalli family is a great honor, I found there great friends and I had the best time ever with them.”
In addition to creating beautiful art, Gilda is committed to using her platform to make a positive impact. She has also worked with World Woman Foundation to empower women. She shares, “Whenever I have an art exhibit i choose my favorite piece and I donate it to a foundation, today World Woman Foundation we need a lot of help for all women and girls.” She also adds that she is happy to be a part of this foundation and that being able to help make a better world by doing what she loves the most is what fills her heart. Her dedication to supporting social causes shows a side of Garza that goes beyond her artistic talent, making her an even more influential figure.
One of her career highlights was having her work displayed at Caesars Palace and other high-profile venues. When asked how the experiences were, Gilda reveals, “I started doing my art exhibits in the Caesars Palace Hotel 6 months after starting my career as an artist, May 5, 2017 my works were seen on all screens at this iconic hotel in Las Vegas, I worked with them for several years on all the festive dates they invited me, I remember my paintings projected with lights on the ceiling from the nightclub with famous Dj such as Calvin Harris, Steve Aoki, Dj Zedd doing their performance and hundreds of people dancing under my art, they were great moments that I never going to forget I will always be grateful to the Omnia nightclub team, Caesars Palace Hotel for all the support they gave me since my beginning, they certainly know how to throw a party, I remember they said we going to make you famous, one day I’ll be back to Las Vegas, is my time to kill it in Europe now.” Having established herself in the art scene, she is looking towards new horizons. With her unique style and unwavering dedication to her craft, Gilda is poised to make an even greater impact in the art world, both in the United States and abroad.
Her journey to becoming an artist was not without challenges, but she faced them head-on with determination and resilience. When asked about her biggest challenges, she said, “I studied accounting and finances, but art has always been my passion, I have been in the right place and at the right time for all these wonderful things happens to me, the doors opened for me in the art world, it was already on the books, this is on my destiny.” Overcoming the obstacles in her path, Gilda fought for her dreams and put her best effort into every event and every artwork she created. “When the art door opened I fought for my dreams like a warrior and I give the best of myself in every event I do, in every event in every artwork I put on, I do my best, now in living my dream, a dream that was not in my plans and life surprised me.”
When questioned about her biggest artistic inspirations, and how they’ve influenced her work, Gilda shares, “I love art, but not only to admire paintings. I like learning about the artists and where they come from as well as their passions. I also like to know about their lives. I really like the renaissance painters like da Vinci, Michelangelo, also from the 20th century like Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, Kandinsky, Frida Kahlo.” What interests her the most about art nowadays is the painters leaving their mark and making history in their paintings.
Gilda also shares a few pearls of wisdom for young, aspiring artists who look up to her. She advices, “Fight for your dreams, use the social media to promote your work, they are free!! be creative, you never know who is watching you and what can happen, there is always a chance to exhibit your paintings, you can start decorating your friends events or many different ways.” She also emphasizes on the importance of showing your art to the world and of never forgetting that wherever you put your energy is where it’s going to grow.
Looking ahead, she has ambitious goals for herself and her art. Excited by the potential impact of her upcoming projects, she says, “I have projects coming up, I’m working on my first monumental sculptures, I’m happy to inspire more people through my art to be the best version of themselves.”
Lastly, Gilda discusses how she sees her work contributing to the broader art community and world at large. “In every project I do, I always think about how I can help to be a better world, to make an impact on the society and to be able to transcend, that is always my priority, I’m focusing on that, the next project I have is something huge that I can’t tell yet but it will be in the history books.”
Gilda’s story is a powerful reminder that even in a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, there is always a place for creativity, self-expression, and social impact.
As she continues to push boundaries and make a lasting impact, her art will undoubtedly inspire future generations to believe in their own potential and use their talents to make a difference in the world.
