Mara Santangelo’s tennis journey began at the tender age of five, sparked by her father, who introduced her to the sport. What started as a playful activity soon turned into a deep-seated passion. Growing up in a small town with limited facilities, Mara learned to make the most of what she had. She recalls countless hours spent on the court, often practicing under challenging conditions. These formative years instilled in her a sense of determination and discipline, traits that became the foundation of her illustrious career.

For Mara, sports have been a profound teacher, imparting lessons in resilience and composure. Tennis, in particular, has taught her to stay calm under pressure, as the game often demands quick decision-making and adaptation in high-stakes situations. “Tennis teaches you to embrace challenges, prepare meticulously, and work hard,” she shares. The sport has shown her that success is never immediate but is always earned through consistent effort.

Mara draws inspiration from tennis legends like Roger Federer and Martina Navratilova. Federer’s effortless style and composure resonate deeply with her, describing his play as “art in motion.” Navratilova, on the other hand, was Mara’s childhood idol, admired not just for her versatility and athleticism but also for her courage and trailblazing contributions to the sport. Both have left a lasting impression on her, shaping her perspective on tennis and life.

Reflecting on a life-changing moment, Mara cites her victory at the French Open doubles in 2007 as a pivotal milestone. This triumph symbolised years of sacrifice, perseverance, and unwavering belief in herself. Overcoming injuries and setbacks, she proved that resilience pays off. The win also highlighted the importance of teamwork, as success in doubles hinges on a strong partnership built on trust and mutual understanding.

Currently, Mara is channeling her passion into organising events that emphasise personal growth through sports. She is particularly excited about programs aimed at young athletes, focusing on mental and emotional resilience alongside skill development. Her workshops incorporate mindfulness, visualisation, and stress management, preparing participants for challenges on and off the court. Additionally, she is involved in initiatives introducing tennis to underprivileged children, hoping to share the transformative power of sports.

When it comes to encouraging children to pursue sports, Mara advises parents to foster a genuine love for the game. “Celebrate progress, not just results,” she says, emphasising the importance of creating a supportive and pressure-free environment. Allowing children to explore different sports and letting their passion guide the way can lead to a more fulfilling experience.

Outside of tennis, Mara finds joy in hiking, which offers her a sense of peace and perspective. Writing is another passion that allows her to reflect on her journey and share her experiences. She also enjoys reading books on personal growth and spirituality, which help her stay grounded. These hobbies remind her of the importance of balance and personal exploration, adding depth to her life beyond the court.

Addressing mistakes adults often make when starting a new hobby, Mara notes that many expect immediate results, becoming discouraged when progress is slow. She advises approaching hobbies with curiosity and patience, focusing on enjoyment rather than comparison. “Consistency is key,” she adds, encouraging small, regular efforts to build satisfaction over time.

Mara’s list of favourite sportspersons includes Roger Federer, whose elegance and precision have always inspired her. She also holds Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams in high regard, admiring their resilience, courage, and transformative contributions to the sport.

For young sports enthusiasts, Mara offers invaluable advice: “Focus on the journey, not just the destination. Embrace challenges, learn from failures, and surround yourself with people who believe in you. Success is not just about trophies; it’s about the person you become along the way. Believe in yourself, work hard, and never stop dreaming.”
